I did say "research universities" after all.

Another demonstration of blind ignorance. What a surprise.

I did say "research universities" after all.- Hide quoted text - > > - Show quoted text - First of all, as previously mentioned, if you were a real researcher, you wouldn't have the time you spend on these newsgroups, let alone the mental energy to spend. Next is the idea that researchers 'earn" funding. In some cases, i is true. The institutuion provies them with lab space, some technicalsupport and facility, but no salary. They get their salary from their grants. I have no problem with that. My hat's off to those people. But!!!! You get people at "major research universites", add in public universities, as that is the case with you. The taxpayer pays for the facilities that are there. The offices, labs, equipment, administrative support. The public pays for it all, including nice salaries for faculty...$150K+ for someone with any accomplishment. For that salary, the faculty are required, as per their tenure contract, to perform certain tasks, usually research and teaching. Fine, so they are being paid to do research and to teach. They are being paid by the taxpayer. They then apply for grants. Say you get a million dollar grant from anywhere, but many if not most come from public agencies of one sort or another. A million dollar grant would require what, another million in overhead; overhead to pay for facilities the taxpayer provides in order to facilitate research...to put it bluntly, the taxpayer has already paid the "overhead". So it is collected twice, which is really nice in the case of public funding, where the taxpayer pays to use facilities the taxpayer paid for in the first place! The grant also includes "salary" for the faculty member..but wait, the taxpayer is already paying the faculty member to do research! To top it off,we get a lot of "deadwood". Deadwood are people who grudgingly fulfill the teaching parts of their contracts, but not the research parts. $150K to work 7 hours per week for about 40 weeks a year! These people should not have their contracts renewed, obviously, as they are in breach. They seem to feel tenure, which is protection of academic freedom, guarantees their job, which is a falsehhod. The interesting kicker to this is that academic freedom issues are the main reason tenured faculty are not renewed. If you are on the wrong side of some poltical thing on campus, you are out! |
