A move from broadcast to cable and a victory by the generally unknown
Louis Oosthuizen helped drag down the numbers for the 2010 British
Open.

ESPN drew a 2.6 overnight rating for final round coverage of the
British Open on Sunday, down 33% from last year (3.9), down 26% from
2008 (3.5) and down 37% from 2007 (4.1). Prior to this year, final
round coverage of the event aired on ABC.

The 2.6 overnight is the lowest ever for final round coverage of the
British Open, nearly a full point lower than the previous low of 3.5.

As recently as 2006, final round coverage drew a 5.0 overnight. That
was the final year Tiger Woods won the event.

Surprisingly, Saturday's third round did better in the ratings,
drawing a 2.7 overnight -- up 13% from last year (2.4), down 4% from
2008 (2.8) and even with 2007 (2.7).

Overnights for the British Open highlight shows on ABC over the
weekend were not immediately available.

I predicted this.

What was the R&A thinking by granting US broadcast rights to ESPN
(without having ABC carry the weekend coverage)?

Nuts.

Might as well have telecast it on a closed circuit feed.

Given the quality of their coverage, closed circuit would have been a
good idea.

http://www.sportsmediawatch.net/2010/07/ratings-plunge-for-final-round-of.html

In the first year of a new television deal with ESPN, the British Open
slumped to its lowest rated final round ever.

Final round coverage of the 2010 British Open, won by Louis
Oosthuizen, drew a 2.1 U.S. rating and 2.966 million viewers on ESPN
Sunday -- down 45% in ratings and 47% in viewership from last year
(3.8, 5.545 mil), down 36% in ratings and viewership from 2008 (3.3,
4.640 mil), and down 43% and 42%, respectively, from 2007 (3.7, 5.147
mil).

This marks the lowest rating ever for final round coverage of the
British Open, and the lowest rating for the final round of any golf
major since at least 1982.

This is only the third time since 1982 that final round coverage of a
golf major has drawn less than a 3.0 rating.

Entering the final round, ratings and viewership for the British Open
had actually increased from last year. Coverage of the first three
rounds averaged a 1.4 U.S. rating and 1.864 million viewers on ESPN,
up 8% in ratings and 10% in viewership from last year's coverage on
TNT and ABC (1.3, 1.701 mil).

Third round coverage on Saturday even drew a higher overnight rating
than Sunday's final round. Final ratings for the third round were not
immediately available.

Overall, the 2010 British Open averaged a 1.5 U.S. rating and 2.020
million viewers on ESPN, down 29% and 27%, respectively, from last
year (2.1, 2.778 mil).

A runaway victory by a relative unknown resulted in the British Open’s
lowest final-round rating ever.

ESPN’s coverage earned a 2.6 overnight, easily topping the previous
low of 3.5, established most recently in 2008 (Padraig Harrington’s
victory in a field sans Tiger Woods) but also hit other years. This
was the first time weekend coverage was on cable rather than ABC.

The network can’t dictate the storyline, but ESPN was lax in its
coverage of golf action. DirecTV viewers who had the option of
watching the BBC feed via the “British Open Mix” saw far more golf
shots. ESPN seemed bogged down with studio analysis and interviews as
well as recapping the action, which is fine for those who tuned in
late but served as an irritant to those who were watching all along.

Saturday’s third round, in which Woods and Phil Mickelson still had a
puncher’s chance of winning, actually drew a slightly higher
numberthan Sunday — a 2.7. That’s a 13 percent increase from ABC’s
third-round number last year (2.4).
