Nobody claimed that his Mac is the ultimate computer.

I've given away PCs to get more powerful PCs. I expect I'll do the
same thing with my Mac. But if no family member wants it, I would
be glad to get money for it.

Old mainframe computers also get sold.

See earlier post - where do yu get $1200 from?

Non sequitur. Macs do not get "obselete". In fact we run a 1999 vintage
G4 at home for a lot of routine tasks. I also use a 2003 17" PowerBook.
I can get a little extra speed and Intel processors from my MacBook Pro,
but the PowerBook runs 99% of what I want just fine. My daughter in
college still has the iBook we bought for her in 5th grade, and it runs
a lot of routine apps just fine. Our Dell Inspiron, on the other hand,
is so slow and frustrating, it sits quietly in the "off" position almost
all of the time.

Old mianframes are harvested for their gold.

How about newer, faster, bigger? :)

Last change up was from a 20" iMac Core2Duo @2.4Ghz to the 27" iMac
Core2Duo @3.06Ghz. Bigger screen for my music engraving and a bit more
speed for some video I fiddle around with.

Bought the 20" new for $1200, sold it for $800 and could have gotten a
little more but the buyer was a young college kid on scholarship. He
got a good deal, I got a good deal on it, and I got to get a new
computer.

Sure, the Mac laptops are pretty darned sturdy in comparison to most of
the Windows laptops in the same or less price range.

But in 3 years you can recover a big percentage of your original cost
making the total cost about the same as a similar Windows laptop.
