I like the iPhone and if I had an actual use for a phone that did all
that, I'd be all over it. But the reality is I don't use a phone all
that much, so my Net10 is costing me about $15/month with no contract
and free phones.

My iPad is used every day. From reading books, watching videos that are
better than streamed to my TV, and a slew of other things, it fits me
just fine.

I wish. When it was time to turn in our Nokias, the first thing I
told the AT&T salesperson was to NOT even mention iPhones. We weren't
interested. Well, he asked me if I had ever even held one. Nope. So
he proceeded to demonstrate. AT the upgrade price of $99 my wife and
I both got one...with the attendant Jawbone earbuds and covers for the
phone. I guess he thought he'd better not push it and didn't even
mention the 3GS. I would've bought them at $169. One month
later...the 4G comes out. Dammit. I have two years to go, unless I
opt for the big $. Then what do I do with the 3G?

The 3G is ok though. A great toy, but a so-so phone. With the Nokia
all I had to do was press one number and it would dial one of the ten
saved phone numbers. The iPhone? First you have to press the phone
button, then go to the Favorite numbers page and scroll to the one
you want and press it. When you're driving that's too many times to
take your eyes off the road.

No golf apps. Weather, news and such. If you happen to have Verizon
FIOS TV there's a great one there for setting your DVR to record
whatever.

Dish Network has an app for their DVR -- I would guess Direct does also....

My kid is selling his "unlocked" 3G phone for $200 on Craigslist. There
remains a demand for them. If you could sell yours, that would take a bite
out of the upgrade. Also...isn't AT&T offering mid year upgrades at a
reduced price.

My wife got her phone last week and today, I was able to research and d/l an
app. called Vlingo. For $9.99, you can convert speech into text and e-mail.
Pretty slick. However, the free app. has voice command, so all you would
have to do is say, "call _____" and away it goes. Beats scrolling.

Heaven.
I wonder if Comcast has the similar app.....or slingbox.

I think this Vlingo app., recommended by CNet is simpler. It doesn't do
text messaging in a conversation but I don't care about that. I text to
talk to the kids, minimally as possible.

I tried out the maps program on my wife phone. I think it's part of the
original software. Anyway, it found an obscure park just fine, with ETA,
etc., but no voice directions (which I hate). The resolution of side
streets was very impressive. Better than my Garmins.

"retinal display" as in screen resolution??
