From: Kev Nurse on 4 Aug 2007 13:57 On Monday, Sam Smale, a well known contributor to this group, will be competing in the UK Senior Amateur Championships at Nairn GC. I don't know what one has to do to get into the Championship, in addition to being a senior golfer, but I believe its substantially more than simply paying the entrance fee. I'll ask him tomorrow, while I'm hosting him at Forres. I'll pass on the best wishes of USG to him, and any other encouraging comments anyone would like to add before I go to the course at 1030. I'll also do my best to keep a watchful eye on his performance during the days ahead and report back to you. But, unlike Sam, I do have a day job to do as well, so no guarantees. Regards Kev PS, I'll suggest he marks his ball in the recommended manner. I wouldn't want him to upset the locals ;-)

I see from the R&A site he is off at 10.17 at Nairn for Round 1. -- Andy Neal Please remove the GREENCARD when you reply

I can assure you the competition is extremely hot but the conviviality is superb. IIRC the most recent 'Australian Senior Amateur' balloted-out entries at about 5.6 hcp (I think the minimum requirement for entry was 15 hcp). Several 'retired' pros were in evidence...but the winners at both events were seriously amateur 'plus' handicappers....as well as being 65+ y'olds. Due to inclement weather at the ''Aust. Senior Amateur' we had a 1 hr delayed start to the final day...as well as a 1 hr suspension of play due to lightning during the pm. To top it all there was a play-off which failed to complete due to 'total darkness', and unfortunately the combatants (both from New South Wales) were unable to return the following day. The 'title', for the first time in its history, was shared between the two. Sam will have a wonderful time, and I wish him well...good golfing Sam! He might even be up against some Aussie and/or Kiwi seniors...who seem to be able to make their way into these events overseas! (especially watch out for those Kiwis Sam!) cheers david
