Unfortunately, our elected officials like to get re-elected and they electorate doesn't look too kindly on them getting that to happen when their particular ox is gored. It is the same problem that has existed for quite some time. Even Reagan, as popular as he was, was not able to cut the spending in any significant way because of all those vested interests.
