Perhaps it explains why there are so many American flags on this list in the
last 40 years
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Open_Championship_champions

Just imagine if the British Open were nearly as important to American
golfers as the Masters or the US Open!
Tiger might not use it as an experiment for a new putter.

Yes, but I am only semi tongue-in-cheek here. When our perception of the
game of golf is target golf played on lush country club courses, with
receptive greens, then we have lost the ability to compete on the links
courses. It is always interesting to see how the young Americans react
to playing in an Open. Some complain bitterly that it is "unfair", but
the good ones come to realize a) it is a different game, and b) it is a
more demanding game, and come to relish it. I was impressed with how
Fowler came back this week to finish so well, after one disastrous round
in the wind. He will do well in the future. Others, not so much.

which course in Portland do you consider a links course? Heron Lakes?
That's the only one I can think of that comes close. I'd like to play
Bandon one of these days but that's pretty expensive, as you mention.
We can get in 6 or 7 rounds at a city course for the price of one
round in Bandon.

I agree, his examples sucked pretty bad.

The course was "designed" before the scorecard. YOu're bassackwards.
