The settlers in a strip some thirty to fifty miles from the foot of the Sierra depended on stream water; everything west of there was basically desert until *deep* well pumps were developed. The giant agribusiness development of the last half century depends almost totally on water brought south and west by the major canal systems. I grew up in that area, and much of it has become a crowded rural slum since I lived there. >>Mammoth Mountain is not very far a away. Los Angeles brought water from the Owens Valley (including the Mammoth area) starting in 1913. It's only now making nice about relinquishing some of that water back to where it comes from--to alleviate dust storms in the dry Owens Lake bed. >About 100 miles.
