I've been meaning to post a short report, but having a hard time to
fit it in among all the sneaker, watch and jersey ads.

It was just two of us for last Saturday's RSG Phoenix mini meetup at
the TPC Scottsdale Champions course. A last minute business trip took
John out of the lineup.

I met up with Scott Newell who was in town for a little spring break
escape from the frozen tundra of eastern Washington. Being our first
out-of-town RSG Phoenix participant, I presented Scott with a
delightful gift on the first tee - a nice maroon Titleist cap with ASU
Sparky the Sun Devil logo. I think he was thrilled and I'm certain he
will wear it often up there in Pullman. :-)

The Champions course started life in 1987 as the TPC Desert course,
built by the the Weiskopf/Morrish team along with the neighboring
Stadium course (home of the FBR Phoenix open) and operated as a low
cost fee-subsidized golf facility for locals. It played to a max 6500
yard par 70 with wide fairways and large greens. Someone decided it
needed to be toughened up to attract tournaments and to be used for
some of the FBR pro-ams, so Randy Heckenkemper, an associate on the
original project and now with his own design business, was brought in
to do the makeover. The course closed in the spring of 2007 for an
estimated $10M revamp which included a new clubhouse and a total
rework of the course. Reopened for play in November '07, it retains
the same basic routing, but the new Champions course is completely
different and now streches out to 7100 yards. Many of the existing
full-grown trees were kept so the couse has a mature feel to it.

Scott and I found it in excellent condition and delightfully
challenging on a PERFECT day for golf. In contrast to the RSG-NC
event, we had sunny skies and a temperature around 80, a nice breeze
kept it from feeling too hot and made it interesting for club
selection. Bunkers come into play on most every shot and some of the
greens have some difficult pin placements. Best of all, it remains a
core layout without housing intrusion, easily walkable and at the
bargain rate of $43 (walking)!

I won't reveal the result of our match, but will mention that after
the round, Scott bought the beer. :-)

Just in case you are keeping score:
Scott Newell = good guy.

Big deal. One golf round of millions played that day. Like a bunch of
total strangers really could care less!

Personally, I find the watch, sneaker, and jersey ads a whole lot more
interesting.

Give it a break; you have complained previously of lack of golf content;
and now you still complain? Regulars here will enjoy this report, I know
I did. When are you going to deliver some golf content?
