Quite often I am asked about a tournament I have been to 9 out of the
last 10 years which is called RSGNW and takes place in southern
Washington and sometimes Oregon. When I tell the story to people I am
walking with on my home course, they are most surprised... many of
them unsure that they would have done the same thing as I did back in
2000.

I have been a computer person for many years and recall the earliest
days of newsgroups/bbs systems. My brother and I hosted the first ever
discussion group for the Vancouver Canucks and I was an early adopter
of RSG, as I enjoyed reading the contributions of many, including the
banter back and forth that folks engaged in. Randy Brown was one
favourite person and I remember talking with him in email about
putting issues and getting his recommendations which I went on to
follow with good results. One other contributor who ended up making a
significant impact on me was Scott Newell.

My involvement with RSG was pretty solitary. I moved to a new town
with my wife and because of another not worth mentioning story we
bought golf memberships in this new community at the same time another
couple did. Our golf similarity was that he golfed, his wife was new
to golf, I golfed and my wife was new to golf. Scott posted a note on
RSG about a tournament called RSGNW. I had read reports of other RSG
tourneys, and thought they sounded like a lot of fun and so sent a
note to Scott. He was most welcoming in his reply. Now to convince my
non computing wife, my non computing friend, and his non computing
wife that this might be a good idea to sign on.

Scott asked for nothing in advance, other than an email commitment to
arrive at Tri-Cities. I told my wife and friends that we had nothing
to lose. If it turned out that Scott and the other participants were
not our style, well, we would have a good time with the four of us and
nothing was to lose. Needless to say, we had a great time, met some
friends, and the lastt 10 years have been proof that this was a good
decision to make.

Since then we have seen Scott and his wife have twin boys, and seen
others battle illnesses, others get engaged, others move on in years
remaining contact though not playing much anymore. I've had an
opportunity to attend other RSG events (still wishing there was an RSG-
Atlanta reprise) and host my own RSG BorderWars event three times in
the last 6 years. My wife and I have travelled to non golf events and
been hosted by RSG folks along the way, and we have had many non RSG
gatherings with folks I met firstly because of my involvement in this
forum.

Part of me loves to continue to visit here and sort through much more
drivel than there was 10 years ago to read messages from many people I
have met, and, many I have yet to met but would love to (ie Anika,
both for golf and for photography).

Networking and communications remain important to me even as I have
retired from daily use of technology in my working life. Thanks to all
of you who contribute to this forum and make it good fun, and
valuable, for me to read.

Cheers... Bob

Thanks Bob...my journey in golf would definitely not be the same had I
not found RSG many moons ago and met many of the great people here
like you and Judy and the Hercuses. The feeling is mutual.
