From: Janet Homer on 8 Jan 2010 17:02 So we are all sitting looking gloomily at the white stuff and wondering when we will get out on the green.green grass of our home course again. A good time to think 'newsgroup'. So, what was your best golf round, hole, shot, acheivement last year? I had a dreadful year - couldn't get my golf going at all. Somehow I managed to hang on to my handicap but really the whole season was a disaster. Howeveer, I went to Vilamoura for a week's golf in October (Vila Sol is a 'must play' course - forget all the rest, though we didn't play the Old Course I have to say). There I didn't play well either, but did play in sunshine every day which loosened up the mind as much as anything. On return there was more bad weather that meant cancelled events but, at the last gasp, the last comp and the last but one round of golf I played before the snow set in, I played a nine hole Christmas Stableford at Grange and for the first five holes the averageness continued - I scored a magnificent 6 points. I then scored a further 13 points on the last four holes, actually had a putt stop on the lip at the last which meant three rather than four points, and won the event fairly convincingly. This was a great confidence booster and I played another friendly round the next Wednesday and played well. Since then - no golf possible at Grange or Kirkby Lonsdale - what a bummer! Still I did manage to mantain my record - I have won at least one event every year for the last ten years, which keeps me going through the rubbish I play for majority of the time. What is your story? All good wishes to eveeryone for 2010 - see ya at this year's UK Sport come-all-ye? Love & peace as ever Janet

So I'll volunteer: Most of my top golf memories come from the holidays, as usual. The year started with a cold trip to Tunisia in February. I liked to play Flamingo (Monastir) and Panorama Course (Port El Kantaoui). Then I decided to visit Hammamet (Citrus Golf). I enjoyed a cheap ride on a shared taxi, two days on two courses with a friendly caddie and a pro lesson of good value. What an adventure and how nice the courses are! Then, Great Britain, playing in Wales (Nefyn cliff top!!!) and sharing the usg bash with you in Patshull Park. Call me nuts but I really enjoyed the second round in the rain. Lucky to receive a good bottle of Port as the second prize ;-> In August, a week's trip to Scotland, reviving all the love I have for this country and its courses. We walked the Old Course and played Jubilee (quite a fortunate arrangement IMHO). Our favourites in the Fife area were Leven Links and Burntisland, a scenic and hilly parkland course. I'll be back! Regarding my game, the highlight was a private round of gross +2 / +2 at home, topping some nice tournament experiences including a net +1 in a medal tourney on a foreign course. Shortly after that, I dropped my handicap by 2.7 points in 12 days. Lucky shots: - First day's drive at #15 in Patshull Park, with an ever-so-slight fade which made it land perfectly on the fairway behind the dogleg (didn't dare to repeat it on Sunday). - A 140 m approach with the rescue at #2 in Beilngries, Germany. I didn't really care for the shot but it went nicely to the green, followed by a perfect long approach putt and a tap-in for Par. - A successful 170 m 5W approach on the 380 m 7th of my home course. I scarcely reach this green in two due to some nasty bunkers in the front. - two or three chip-in birdies - they are too rare! These are my best chances to score a birdie on a Par 4 because frequently I'm too short to hit the GIR. - two or three Pars on tracks of more than 500 m, including the 540 m 3rd in my home town, Fuerth. Let's see what 2010 brings! Ciao, Paul

Of shots I remember from other times, hitting driver to the centre of the green, into the wind at Headingley's par 3 6th hole, then holing the putt for birdie stands out. > > All good wishes to eveeryone for 2010 - see ya at this year's UK Sport > come-all-ye? > Aye. I'll be in touch soon. -- Mark Myers usenet at mcm2007 dot plus dot com I call that a radical interpretation of the text.

On our third hole I once played three consecutive shots with wrong balls!! And if you think that is the end of the matter, one of them was a yellow ball. Oh dear! Pat

Hole 12, teeing ground...one Pro says to the other "I've lost my ball marker pen ('texta') may I use yours to freshen up my marks". On receiving the texta the first Pro notes that in fact it is red, cf. his original which was black.....and he marks his ball with it. Without asking each other for a comparison they now have balls which are coincidentally marked with the same coloured dots. The owner of the texta, however, also had an alignment line marked on his ball.....so it was technically separately identifiable. On the teeing ground of the next hole the second Pro was looking at his ball and he commented "Gee, it doesn't take long for the alignment mark to wear off, does it!". The first Pro looks at his own, sees it has the alignment mark, and then they realise that thay have played each other's balls somewhere during the previous hole. They looked at each other....saying, in effect, what is the penalty. Neither of them knew!! So they evidently decided to play on until they could find a PGA official for a ruling. The stupid thing is, they had a qualified, labelled, and accredited 'Rules Official' walking with them, he had all the appropriate identification and had introduced himself as such when he first met them on the 1st tee. He was also acting as a score recorder and radioing their scores through to base...they seem to have forgotten that he was actually their group Rules Official (albeit keeping a low profile, which we do!). The Rules Official, of course, was not aware of any of this and did not know there was a problem until, on the 17th, the players somehow realised he was an authority, because he was giving them procedural advice on something. They then admitted to him that they had played wrong balls two or three holes previously.....so "What is the penalty...and what do we score for that hole?". Answer...."If you knew just the basic rules then you would have copped 2-strokes each on that hole and you would have had to go back and replay properly from where you thought you had swapped balls.....wait while I call in a PGA Rules Official"! It is quite normal, in an open event with Pros playing, for the accredited (amateur) rules officials to call in the PGA to 'do the deed' when a DQ on one of their members is involved!!! Naturally, on this occasion, both players were DQ'd!! (They hadn't corrected their 'error' before playing from the next teeing ground). Idiots!! cheers david
