Your "scrutiny" reveals only your academic jealousy. You sold your soul to the mill, and have nothing to show for it while I am a free to go where I want to go and do what I want to do, and have, including a dabble in materials science. Bet you have zero academic output at all outside some narrow field in materials science. Too bad for you! A publication is what it is, and if some OSU P&T committee doesn't want to see it that way, you can tell them for me that they can stuff it! What they think is only meaningful in some narrow context that is of no concern to the world at large anyways. The ACS symposium series isn't my only materials science publication anyways. Now where I come from, work for industry are considered "gray literature" and not considered as legit for tenure. If I did, say, some survey for some wind turbine corp on it's ecological impact, it would not be acceptable for tenure; but if it were published, so it would be! Again, your concern is telling here, as I represent myself truthfully, which you yourself have shown. Even if I didn't attend the ACS symposium, it's not the only one!
