That was my problem as well
solution:
Make sure you are really onto your left leg
before impact
That moves the bottom of your swing arc forward
and you hit down on the ball

I've had practice sessions where the only thing I do is try to create
a good divot. Someday I will do something other than screw up my
swing even worse than before. I can hit fat, I can hit thin, but I
can't hit steep and thin.

How do I know the dirt has been ground?

(I won't bother to ask you why baseball is played on ground dirt,
at this time, as it might distract you from these instructions.)

With a tee? There's lead in my pencil but not in my tee.

> place a plastic ball, or a tee on the line

Or? What does a tee have in common with a plastic ball?

> using your normal setup (not back as you would a bunker shot)

Normal setup without back? Without my back it's not normal at all.

> hit the ball or tee

How can I hit the ball OR the tee? You said "place a plastic ball,
or a tee on the line", you didn't say "place a plastic ball, AND a tee
on the line"

> , and check carefully where your swing takes dirt

Takes dirt where?

> (after the line.)

It this your suggestion as to WHERE the dirt is taken?
(I really appreciate this extra help!)

> Practice this for a while, concentrating on clean contact

Pretty difficult with all this ground dirt, I'm sinking into it, up
to my knees already. Clean? I'll send you my laundry bill.

> Now go hit off a regular fairway lie, and enjoy the results.

Hit off? Don't you been "hit ON a regular fairway lie"? If I'm
OFF a regular fairway lie, I must be on an irregular one, and
what good will that do me?

You would, I wouldn't - probably the reason you hack around off 10+

The "need" to take a divot is total balls.
