I know quite a bit about genetic diseases, and I don't think a
freshman text in materials science will add anything to anyone's
knowledge of genetic diseases, which is the issue here.

No, but it might bring you up to speed on a field you claim to be
familiar with and have published in. When you get stuck on simple things
like point groups, I can help, but not if you continue to believe there
is such a thing as an "x-ray crystallograph". It would at least be a
start - complicated things like diseases can come later, but you need to
walk before you run.
