My friend, the one with cancer, had never been an IC in his life. He had
to become one, without healthcare or any other benefits, because he had
no choice due to the recession. But I guess it's his fault that his
previous employer hit the skids.

Nobody survived that long.

But humanity has survived at various times without education, roads,
houses, farms, etc.

Using the common definition of "work full-time", Americans who don't
work include children, housewives, househusbands, and retired people.
We do have more two income households than we had in the past.

I haven't seen the math.

But I have seen actual examples where one person can pay a higher tax
rate with increased income, while another person pays a lower tax rate
with increased income. There are multiple variables involved.

As an example. Let's say you are only able to afford food and
medicine and those aren't taxed. You pay zero. You get a nice
raise and buy yourself a car and pay tax on it. Then you have an
even nicer raise and invest it in tax free securities.

Your tax rate went up and then down as your income increased.

No, I live in a rich county.
